There is one more thing to consider: people overlook the fact that many of the customers are coming from countries with lower earnings. When you consider developer or designer from Poland, Romania, Czech Republic (or even poorer countries), who earns ¼ of their USA counterparts, the increase in cost gets more painful. 100% of the yearly cost for one app might not make a difference, but for 5 apps… one begins to look for alternatives
(Also, many USA based companies do not support EU local sales, making billing, tax returns, etc. less effective or even impossible. This adds to the cost of the app not only by lost tax deduction or income lowering, but also by more accounting paperwork.)
I believe that with the switch to subscription models, variability for regions should come — and yes, I know, we are all citizens of the world, but the world is not equal right now.
